Flea Market Canvas

home projects 037c

I have been keeping a secret from you.

In addition to working on my front-room-to-office transformation (you can see the latest installment of that here), I have also been working on a major living room redecorating project!  I never know if I’m “supposed” to show it off in bits and pieces or with a major reveal…so forgive me if I’m not doing it right!

So while it may be a bit backward, I’m going to show off the most recent project for the living room first!

I fell in love with these vintage-y canvases from Mandy Lynne when I saw them at an upscale furniture store.

There are posters available through her Etsy shop for about $65/each (canvases are considerably more expensive), but that was both out of my price range and not the look I was really after.

So I spent a lot of time scheming how to “knock-off” her work.  I created a whole Silhouette design, but the thought of the layers of stenciling I would have to do to recreate the color scheme intimidated me more than a little.

Then I had the great idea of using the overhead projector, like I have on so many coffee tables, but on the night I wanted to do it—I found that I couldn’t get the image to be the right size for the canvas I had prepared.

So…I took a leap and just started sketching.  And to my great great great surprise…it wasn’t all that bad!  My layout differs slightly…it changed as I filled up spaces too quickly  Winking smile

In fact, it was good enough that I took the next leap…painting!   I was able to choose colors that complemented my home better than the gray of the original.

Here’s how they look side-by-side!

I won’t lie to you…I’m super excited with how this turned out!  It’s my first EVER real painting!  (We’re not counting furniture!)

I hung it on the living room wall today, and I’m not embarrassed to have it there…I think!

I’m proud at myself for attempting something so new and different.  I have a mother and a sister who are incredible artists, so trying anything remotely like painting or drawing has been very intimidating for me.

But at least I can say now…I tried!

Updated to add:  Yes, I had to make the Farmers Market Canvas as well!  You can see it here.

I am impressed, Korrie! I think you did a beautiful job and I love the colors. If I tried something like this, you'd think a 5 year old did it! I like to see bits and pieces of makeovers and then the whole thing all together. It's nice to see how something {like this canvas} becomes part of the whole room in the end.

Love it Korrie! My daughter has done this before with vintage posters... now I have some new inspiration for her... perhaps one in time for my birthday :)

You did a fabulous job and it's nice that you could change the colors up a bit to suit yourself :)

Your color scheme and design are much more aesthetically pleasing than the original not that it is a bad piece. It caught your eye for a reason right?! Beautiful inspiration!
Great job.

Good for you, Korrie! It's absolutely beautiful. I, too, have an artist sister and mother who was very talented. It's been difficult for me to explore my creativity because I don't think I'm good enough, but when I force myself, I'm always so happy with what happens. I give you a big BRAVO!! I love everything you do!

Korrie - it's wonderful! I found you on the Funky Junk linkup and thought "I WANT THAT!!!". Isn't it always surprising and a fabulous feeling when we do something that we didn't think we could do and it turns out great? I'm not a painter at all (except for walls LOL) but once I took an old suitcase and painted my company logo on the front. It took hours and I was so happy with the way it turned out. Until I realized that because it was a suitcase - if I held it by the handle, it made the picture be upside down LOLOLOL But it's still there - just didn't have the heart to paint it out and try it right side up!

WHAT?! What took you so long to paint?? These are gorgeous!

Wow wow wow. I'm beyond impressed. I sure hope you keep this hidden talent up. Seriously... stunning!

Korrie- I've never heard of the artist you referred to; but I'm sure she would feel flattered!
You did a fantastic job. I've recently thought of painting too. Sometimes I make little sketches while sitting-- the other day, my Honey said to me, "I didn't know you could draw." Hmmm... I guess we all have hidden talents.

love your paintings, I'm off to see the new room!
