Design Challenge

Remember my poor despised front room that I talked about here?

I’m still working on getting a picture in my head of what I want that room to be when it’s all grown up!

Debra at Common Ground has agreed to help me out as part of her Design Challenge feature today.

I hope you’ll come on over to see more pictures of my now (mostly) naked front room, and help me figure out what to do with it!

I left a comment on Debra's blog, but I think if you can get rid of that half wall and have a pretty banister that will open it up. Love the idea of the half bookcases. Maybe some board and batten? Can't wait to see what takes place. Toodles, Kathryn @TheDedicatedHouse

Okay. Back. First...you shared more pics over there than on your blog before and I have a better feel for the room and it's location in your house. I also read most of the comments over there and have some thoughts.

I don't agree with those who simple put, copy the inspirational photo because if that was exactly what you wanted, you would have done it. So I would take a better look at it and try to determine what it is that you are attracted to. The white? The colors? The slipcovered chairs? The simple lines in the furniture? Kinda Pottery Barn looking. Also consider the rest of your house. You don't want this room looking so different that it doesn't flow with everything else.

Another thing about the photo that is vastly different than your current space is the lighting. It is SUPER lighted and your room currently isn't lit well. Consider this. Do you have pot lights in the ceiling?? Could the room use some lamp lighting?? A corner torch lamp that could cast might throughout the room??

In terms of a bookcase. You have 6 kids!!!!!!! Do you really need the extra dusting job?! Bookcases are huge dust attractors and in the real world (not staged magazine photos) they have a tendancy to look cluttered over time. Think hard about that one.

I think the best idea with the staircase that was given is the re-surfacing the wall with beadboard or new, nice casing. Change the handrail for sure. You could add a little iron work in that regard. Someone also suggested a long bench. Amazing idea. I once saw one in a home made of rough cut poplar. It was seriously long, like a church pew. It's the only thing I remember about that home....that is saying something. Breaking down the wall and replacing it might get more expensive than you think. You might want to call a few stairway railing people out and grift them for ideas too.

Perhaps the best advice I can give you is: GET ON WITH IT! Make some decisions and move forward. Stop doubting yourself.

Keep us posted. and happy reading....you got a lot of post over there piling up to read!!!!! lol
