Anyway, my sister loves cedar chests as much (if not more) than I do! Last summer I finished this one for her:
She is an amazing seamstress, and she needed somewhere to store her vast collection of fabric. The hunt didn’t end there…next there was this one which she wanted to have refinished for her oldest daughter.
I painted the base in a soft gray “oops” paint that I transformed into homemade chalk paint.
I used a black glaze to highlight the pretty moldings…
…and I painted the handles with oil-rubbed bronze spray paint.
I used “ebony” Minwax stain (for the first time) on the top of the chest, and I really liked it! I think it took three coats to get the color as dark as I wanted, but I like that you can still see the wood grain through it.
The bottom drawer had originally been felt-lined, but the felt had—shall we say—“decomposed” over time! I sanded out the fuzzy remains, and then lined the drawer with a fun pink fabric (I used Mod Podge under and over the fabric to seal it in there). I think it is my favorite feature of the whole chest!
Just yesterday I picked up another cedar chest for my other niece…so I need to get motivated to paint some more furniture!
…and…the weather needs to warm up!
Unfortunately (but predictably), the groundhog saw his shadow, so there’s six more weeks of winter for Utah!

That doesn't even look like the same piece Korrie! And what wonderful storage! Nicely done, as always!
ReplyDeleteGreat looking pieces, Korrie! They both look they hold a lot for storage.
ReplyDeleteFabulous work! That grey is amazing & I totally love the first one you showed.

You do amazing work. Your sister is lucky to have you. I am thinking you need a wider blog for bigger pics because your transformations are awesome and need to be seen as big as possible!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAlways amazing what you and paint can do. The second chest doesn't even look like the same chest. I agree w/ Tracy, you should make your right side bar narrower so your pics will show up bigger. As if I'm some sort of blogging guru, ha! I just changed mine up and made a collage that is so in your face. I'll figure out how to fix that someday. Beautiful change ups as always :)
ReplyDeleteThis turned out great! I love the natural wood top and white bottom. I need to try making my own chalk paint- it looks really cool!
ReplyDeleteYour amazing! The cedar chests have such character and the paint really brings it out! xoxo
ReplyDeleteSo Beautiful. I Love both of the cedar chests and how you transformed them.
ReplyDeleteTHE CHEST TURNED OUT BEAUTIFUL, I LOVE THE COLOR!
ReplyDeleteLooks great! I love the ebony stain. I have used it several times and am always happy with how it turns out.

Love the idea of mod podging (that IS a verb, right?) fabric for a drawer liner. On my way to Pin it!

Really beautiful. I love the dark ebony stain, I've been scared to use it but, it looks so good....I'll try it in April when it gets warm enough here in Alberta to paint outside.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!! I love all the detail in that chest. Well done :)
ReplyDeleteThat is gorgeous! You are so incredibly talented!
ReplyDeleteHow long did that take you?
Oh Korrie this is gorgeous! Your niece is a lucky girl. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking up at A Simply Klassic Home!
Beautiful furniture! ...and regardless of what the cursed groundhog does, there will always still be six weeks of winter here in Utah!
ReplyDeleteHow can there be six more months of winter when we've not HAD winter yet??? :D
ReplyDeleteI love the fabric! That is my favorite part too! I'm a bit crazy in the head but it would be fun to have a different fabric (coordinating of course :D ) in each drawer. Kind of a little surprise. Magical.
i know what you mean about always finding something you love but it's in your sister's neck of the woods. my sister lives in mapleton. i find so much stuff i want around there!! she's been so kind to pick up a few pieces for me. your chest is another beautiful piece!!
ReplyDeleteThis is so pretty, Korrie. I've used the ebony stain before and like it.
ReplyDeleteThese are beautiful chests. I have one that my parents gave me on my 15th birthday and it is sooo ugly. No pretties on it at all. Come summer time, I may pull it out of the closet, find some pretty wooden appliques and paint it a French Gray. hmmmmmmm....sounds like a plan to me.
ReplyDeletei just love the details on this one- so unique and kind of even modern, too!
ReplyDeleteOh these turned out great! You did such a beautiful job on them.
ReplyDeleteThat pink fabric is perfect! I love what you've done with that chest. Perfect for a young girl. :)
ReplyDeleteYou do such beautiful work. I can only hope to be as good as you someday. Love your blog.
ReplyDeleteI love both of these, great job!!
ReplyDeleteOhh how I wish I could paint like you! You are so talented. :)
ReplyDeleteI just built a bench and I'd love to get this look!
