Retro Red

From a vintage baby cradle to a retro buffet…I am a woman of contrasts! I fell in love with this piece at Deseret Industries:

Larachest 001

It really is a lovely piece. The wood was in remarkable good condition…the finish…not so much. Whatever had been on there for a protective coat flaked off like mad…it looked like I was sanding in a snowstorm!

I know aqua is all the rage, and I gave serious consideration to that color—but I decided to go back to my first love: red!

retro buffet

I had a terrible time getting the color to photograph well. It was almost a brick red before I glazed it with black…then it seemed to turn a dark cranberry.

retro red buffet

The next picture is too bright…but I wanted to show the cute key! I love the fact that this buffet has a key. I painted the rest of the hardware with ORB spray paint, but I left the key it’s original brass.

Do you have a color you love, despite all the trends? What is it?

I LOVE the color!! The piece looks stunning!

I have completely bucked the whole gray/teal/blue trend. I love deep reds like this and sage greens and browns....so I'm sticking it out. :)

Red is definitely my color! I don't care what the trends are...I have to have something I can live with and enjoy.

Great job on this, as usual! It looks amazing compared to the before and yes, the key is perfect.

The funny thing is is that red was the trend about 5 years ago, who knows what the newest and greatest will be next! The important thing is that YOU like it, and if you're selling it THEY like it! I think it looks beautiful. What glaze did you use exactly, I need a good black glaze.

How do you manage to outdo yourself every time. I love the red. You have such a knack for knowing just what color to use. Now if I could just borrow you for awhile.

I am still working on my first red piece. Not sure if I like the red though. It has a lot of orange tones to it. But it was free paint ~ LOL!!

I know I like this color - a lot! Sometimes I like the turquoise stuff I see and sometimes I don't. Since this piece didn't have a lot of details, I think the red was a better choice.

Nice! I love that you gave it the "Red Hen Touch." Really great color the glaze is a nice touch. I like most colors except purple and yellow.

Wonderful in the Cranberry color, you did a great job, I know how hard it is with the old finish it had! I love it, inspiration for me to use some of my red paint!

Found you at A Little Knick Knack's linky party. Your redo looks fantastic! When you said red I pictured a bold, primary color red. This is more a darker, richer shade that I think will look good for a long time!

This looks wonderful. I love the red! Aqua IS a great option, but if it doesn't work for your home, then why use it? I love the dark stain on it as well! Great job.

I love your blog!! You're so creative and I just love the way you made this red!! :) I'm looking around and love all you do!! Do you have how you painted this chalkboard? I like the greyish look it has, rather than a dark black. So pretty!
